Khawaja, Stoinis, Marsh miss out on Australia contract

Australia middle-order batsman Usman Khawaja played a key role in Australia’s batting line-up when Steve Smith and David Warner were banned. But the Ashes did not go well for him last August. The 33-year-old batsman had been dropped from the squad since the July-August tour of England.

Marnus Labuschagne and Joe Burns have been added to Cricket Australia’s 2020-2021 season. There are some more surprises in Cricket Australia’s list of 20 members ahead of the 2020 Twenty20 World Cup and the upcoming Indian series in Australia next season.

Marcus Harris, who has been out of the squad since last year’s Ashes tour, has also been dropped from the squad. Nathan Coulter-Nile, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis are also out of the deal. All four were not in the squad for the last World Cup.

Peter Siddle (resigned) and Ashton Turner (excluded) have additionally been disregarded after they had earned upgrades during the year.

However, Joe Burns has been included in the new contract. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, pacer Kane Richardson and spinner Ashton Agar have also returned to the squad, having been dropped from the 2019-20 list.

Trevor Hohns, chairman of Cricket Australia’s selection panel, said:

“As Mitch Marsh and Matthew Wade have proven, there are in every case a lot of chances for the individuals who have passed up a great opportunity to be re-chosen by performing reliably at domestic level; and significantly to benefit as much as possible from any open door that comes their way at international level.

“Like all the time, unfortunately, someone is left out. However, not being on the list does not mean that Australia will not get a chance to represent.”

According to Hohns, it is not that Khawaja will not get a chance to play international cricket without a contract. The doors of the Australian team are open for this experienced batsman. The selectors have signed Glenn Maxwell for the 2020-2021 season, who was ruled out of the game due to mental health rest and elbow surgery last October.

On the other hand, two top-order batsman Nicole Bolton and Elyse Villani have been dropped from the women’s cricket contract. Fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck and two all-rounders Tahlia McGrath and Annabel Sutherland have been signed.

CA men’s contract list: Ashton Agar, Joe Burns, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.

CA women’s contract list: Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Meg Lanning, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham.
