Kings XI Punjab sets in fourth beating Gujarat Lions
Kings XI Punjab, with their first away win, has placed themselves in the fourth position in the point table of ongoing tenth edition of the Indian Premier League. On Sunday, at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, they have defeated Gujarat Lions by 26 runs.
To defend the total of 188 runs was tiring for Kings XI Punjab but they had overcome the weariness at last, restricted Dinesh Karthik to lead the team into the victory. He was unbeaten scoring 58 runs in 44 balls with 6 shots of four.
Sandeep Sharma brought the initial success for Kings XI Punjab protecting the team from the destruction of Brendon McCullum who was adjudged leg before wicket in the last ball of the first over.
It was quite a hard punch for the Lions chasing a competitive total; the home team, literally failed to manufacture any notable partnership in their innings to make a successful chase.
40 runs added between Aaron Finch and Suresh Raina, Finch became the second hunt for Sandeep in the match after scoring 13 of 12.
Pinch hitter Suresh Raina hit well in his 32 runs (24 balls) but could not last the partnership longer than 24 runs in the third wicket with Karthik.
After the departure of Raina in the ninth over of the Gujarat Lions’ innings, the rest of the batsmen except Dinesh Karthik were on and off the field. Karthik was the highest scorer for the team.
Losing 7 wickets, Gujarat Lions reached up to 162 runs in their 20 overs of the game. Sandeep Sharma, K Cariappa and Axar Patel all claimed 2 wickets each for Kings XI Punjab.
In the earlier part of the match, Gujarat Lions won the toss and opted to field first. Hashim Amla, after his superlative century in the previous match, delivered another near perfect innings of 65 runs.
With exquisite placement and timing, the South African maestro flicked 9 fours and 2 sixes in his 40 ball innings. Amla’s innings laid the foundation of Kings XI Punjab’s innings after they lost opener M Vohra early in the second innings.
The visiting team enjoyed a rather compact batting effort from the middle order – Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Axar Patel all reached in their thirties in hurry.
Axar Patel scored the second highest after Hashim Amla, Patel’s 34 came from 17 deliveries with 3 shots to the boundary and 2 to over boundary.
