Kolkata Knight Riders won the title in IPL 2012 by beating Chennai Super Kings in the final and then repeated the winning formula in IPL 2014 season where they defeated Kings XI Punjab in the final.

Since then, they couldn’t make a serious bid for the title as they struggled to win games. They lost the reputation of a top-class team after failing to make it to the playoffs in the last two seasons. Talking about their performance in the 2020 season, they were pretty decent.

Although they were level on points with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore, they were separated by Net Run Rate and which is why they couldn’t make it to the playoffs. SRH, KKR and RCB secured 14 points each.

SRH and RCB made it to the playoffs on the basis of NRR while KKR finished fifth in the points table. So many things happened at KKR camp in IPL 2020 season. Dinesh Karthik stepped down as KKR captain to concentrate on his batting as Eoin Morgan took the charge as KKR captain.

KKR came under fire for their inability to compete for the trophy despite having big guns in their squad. The Knight Riders are likely to release big players from the squad before the deadline (January 21).

As per the inside information from KKR sources, Shah Rukh Khan’s franchise is unlikely to continue with Dinesh Karthik (INR 7.4 crore) and left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav (INR 5.8 crore) in the squad for the upcoming season of the IPL.

“KKR already has Tom Banton, talented Nikhil Naik as wicket-keeping options in the squad. The team may continue with them and will let go of other options”, said one of the sources close to KKR team management.

Dinesh who lost his captaincy to Eoin Morgan midway through the tournament is all set to lose his contract. The wicketkeeper-batsman managed to score only 169 runs from 14 games with a poor batting average of 14.08, which is very low considering a player of his calibre.

Kuldeep Yadav is also likely to lose his contract at KKR franchise. The spinner played only 5 games and took just 1 wicket to his name. The source told InsideSport that the Indian spinner is likely to be released before the deadline.

Leg-spin bowler Varun Chakravarthy played 13 games and took 17 wickets to his name. With the emergence of Varun, KKR team management reckons there is no place for Kuldeep to feature in the playing XI.

KKR will have 13.2 crores back in their wallet after releasing Kuldeep and Karthik. With this amount, they will look to splash the cash wisely during the IPL 2021 auction.
