Virat Kohli also explained his decision to give opening batsman Mayank Agarwal a Test debut in the 2018-19 Australia series. Mayank Agarwal, who made his Test debut versus Australia in the Boxing Day Test, managed to score a half-century in his very first innings of the game.

Recalling that special moment, Indian captain Virat Kohli told Agarwal in a video posted on the official website of the Board of Control for Cricket in India that Mayank’s character stood out more for him than the total number of runs he had aggregated in the domestic circuit.

“I had seen you play for RCB, even then you played international bowlers with conviction and you would take them on. You were performing in first-class matches in a dominating way. That is something always stood out with you, I would say your character stood out for me than the number of runs. I knew you would be fearless without having any baggage,” Kohli added in a statement.

Mayank Agarwal has clearly lived up to his standards in the longest format of the game as he scored as many as 974 runs from 11 matches at a splendid average of 57.29. He scored three centuries, including two double hundreds and three fifties.

Virat Kohli and Mayank Agarwal will soon be seen in cricketing action for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab respectively when the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) begins from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.
