KXIP escape through narrow win

Kings XI Punjab escaped to a narrow defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the twelfth match of the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League. KXIP raised themselves to the second position in the point table with 4 points playing equal number of matches to Chennai Super Kings.

The 4 run win whipped out all the good works done by CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The former Indian captain toiled hard to get close to the target, proceeded even closer when the team needed 17 runs off last 6 deliveries at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

Dhoni’s terrific hit for a six into the long off in the last delivery of the innings engrossed Chennai Super Kings 4 runs short off the target with no ball to spare.

The CSK skipper, injured himself earlier in the innings, survived till the end, faced 49 deliveries striking 6 shots to the boundary and another 5 for sixes.

Earlier Ambati Rayudu inhibited well after CSK lost 3 wickets within 56 runs. Rayudu partnered with MS Dhoni for 57 runs; the wicket keeper batsman, afterwards, constructed another 50 run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja taking his side almost home.

The first half of the match was comprised of Chennai Super Kings winning the toss and opted to field first.

Kings XI Punjab innings began with a beautiful 96 run first wicket stand between Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle.

The premier Caribbean T20 blaster, playing his first match for the Kings XI Punjab this season, seasoned his batting with wonders, he was, ultimately the highest scorer for the team in the match.

The Jamaican giant’s powered hitting prowess KXIP innings to mount runs rapidly before he was dislodged by Shane Watson in the 12th over of the innings, caught by Imran Tahir.

Striking 7 fours and 4 sixes, Chris Gayle obtained 66 runs in 33 deliveries. Kings XI Punjab’s innings was adorned by cameo knocks from a number of batsmen. Mayank Agarwal, Yuvaraj Singh and Karun Nair scored 30, 20 and 29 respectively.

At the end of playing three matches by all eight participating franchises, Sunrisers Hyderabad are standing at the top of the point table with all three wins.

While Mumbai Indians are struggling below most position with no win in their bag so far.
