Live: Bangladesh on the highway to haven

At stumps of day four of the second test match of UCB series Bangladesh looks poised. As far winning Dhaka test and squaring the series Bangladesh is on the highway to haven. Having reduced Zimbabwe to 74/2 chasing an improbable victory target of 443 all Bangladesh need in 90 overs of day five wicket is 7 remaining wickets. We are not sure injured Chattara would hold the bat. Bangladesh batting in the second innings declared at 224/6 At stumps of day four visitors could reach 74/2.

Mahmudullah and Miraz leave the field after declaring at 224/6
Mahmudullah and Miraz leave the field after declaring at 224/6

Bangladesh did not enforce follow on. Batting second time on a misty morning they ran into trouble from top order collapse against very accurate incisive pace bowling of Jarvis and Tripano. Kayes, Liton and Mominul came and went. At 3/10 by the 5th over Bangladesh was looking down the barrel. The crisis deepened when dependable Mushfque also failed making it more miserable at 4/25. Skipper Mahmudullah joined debutant Mithun. They weathered the stormed and weaved a glossy partnership of 118. Mahmudullah remained not out scoring 101 his second test hundred. Mithun scored 67 and got out trying to step up the tempo. Like the first innings Mehedy Miraj once again was brides mate giving admirable company to Mahmudullah. He partnered Mushfiq in his first innings vigil.

Bangladesh declared second time in the test at 224/6 at tea immediately after Mahmudullah reached his milestone. Few thought he was late. But the wicket playing true and Zimbabwean batting well in the series did not give assurance to Bangladesh risking declaring early. There will be always talk why Bangladesh did not enforce follow on? Why the declaration was late? But if the match is won all such question would be buried. It will be unfortunate if Bangladesh does not win from where they are with three full session on the last day wicket. Morning session will hold the key. Masakdaza and Chari are back in the pavilion. Taylor and Williams are at the wicket. These two, Moore and Raza may be roadblocks on Bangladesh highway to haven.  Terrific Taijul and majestic Mehidy were asking questions. Bangladesh must hold nerves, take their catches. It should be game, set and match for them. Winning the test would save them from the humiliation of losing the series against lowly Zimbabwe.

Talking about yesterdays play no praise would be enough for Mahmuduallh and Mithun. Debutant was wading across a turbulent sea when his skipper joined him. Jarvis and Tirpano were really exploiting the morning condition and weakness of Bangladesh top order against moving balls pitched in off stump corridor. Kayes and Mominul would feel disgraced when they see the footage of the manner they threw away their wickets. Liton got out to an almost unplayable delivery. Mushfiq could be smarter in playing the stroke which caused his demise. Mithun after his first innings dreadful duck started a bit uncertain. But as time tickled, he settled and played with assurance. Mahmudullah on the other end was picture perfect. He was due for a good innings and it could not be a better occasion when he performed yesterday. The pair salvaged Bangladesh from a disastrous situation.  By the time Mithun got out at 67 the team was already inside green safety zone. The declaration was delayed a bit as Mahmudullah neared a milestone. It is not often a batsman gets opportunity of scoring century. Declaring at tea left four full session for getting visitors all out.

Bangladesh opened with Mustafiz and Taijul . Chari and Masakadza were in survival mission. Mustafiz and Taijul started teasing. Chari should have been out early. Miraz failed to grasp an easy opportunity in the slip off the bowling of Taijul. He dropped him again off the bowling of debutant Khaled. Chari was batting aggressively. Masakadza was much more careful. Miraz deceived Masakadza with a delivery which held its line. He popped a catch to Mominul at chilly mid on. Bangladesh drew the first blood. Masakadza scored 25. First innings hero Taylor joined Chari. When discretion was the order of the day brain freeze caused Chari lose his composure. In his attempt for reverse sweeping Taijul he was adjudged LBW. He asked for DRS and lost it. Willams joined Taylor. Zimbabwe finished day four at 74/2 still 367 runs away from improbable target.

Morning will show the day whether sun will shine on team tigers. Usually on a fifth day in Bangladesh wicket it is not easy to survive. But do not take way anything from Zimbabwe. They have produced wonderful cricket in the series so far. It will be a wonderful job for them if they can escape unhurt. But that will almost impossible.

Bangladesh team think tank must be in a serious dilemma. Kayes and Lion looks completely out of sorts in negotiating new ball even on batting friendly conditions. Yes Jarvis is an intelligent swing bowler. But in four innings they looked pretty ordinary. Tamim may be missing West Indies series. Bangladesh needs reviewing options. There are not many. It was great that 6,7 & 8 looking better and Mithun shrugged his debutants nerve.  Bangladesh would definitely not want the horror and nightmare of Caribbean test experience re appearing.

OUT! Caught. Mehedi Hasan to Kyle Jarvis. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid on, by Ahmed. Mehedi Hasan nips in with his fifth to finish off the game. Jarvis tries to clear the ropes this time, but skews the shot, with the bat turning on impact. The debutant runs back from mid on, and gobbles it up with ease.A fantastic Test Match to end a wonderful series. Fitting that it ends one a piece. Zimbabwe did well just to take it to the fifth day, after conceding a massive first innings total. Much of that was down to the double century from Mushfiqur Rahim and daddy hundred of Mominul Haque. The spin duo of Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan combined to pick up 15 wickets between them. They were the men who stood up for the Tigers to earn them a series draw. You cannot forget the special performance of Brendan Taylor, who almost single-handedly kept his side in the game. The hosts will draw their attention to the Windies, as the first Test against them starts next week in Chattogram. Hopefully that will be just as exciting as this contest.
