Malinga to be rested for Scotland ODIs


Sri Lanka’s veteran Lasith Malinga will take one week rest in his country before leaving for the marquee event. The news was confirmed by Ashantha De Mel who is the chief selector and manager for the Sri Lankan team.

He will not be available to play the two-match ODI series against Scotland on the dates, May 18 and 21 respectively. Instead, he is planning to join the team in Cardiff on May 22.

Speaking exclusively over telephone from Colombo, he said, “it would be more than 50 days when Malinga has been playing the IPL by then and he needs rest. It is best for him to take a break before being recharged for the prestigious tournament”.

“At present, he is assumed that he would miss both the matches against Scotland on 18th and 21st May (Edinburg). He is planning to join the team in Cardiff on 22nd”.

“If everything goes according to the plan, Malinga will be available for both the warm-up games against South Africa and Australia”, he further added.

SL scheduled to play warm-up games

Sri Lankan team is scheduled to play the ICC warm-up matches against South Africa on May 24 at Cardiff and against Australia at Southampton on May 27.

Lasith Malinga is currently plying his trade for Mumbai Indians and the team has even qualified for the playoffs. The experienced campaigner has played a phenomenal role in the team’s success of late and will also be looking forward to implementing his success formula in the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians became the third team after Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to qualify for the playoffs. They have one more match left in the group stage as they take on Kolkata Knight Riders on May 5 (Sunday) at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
