Marnus Labuschagne enters into an exclusive record club
Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has made an entry into an exclusive club of records on the way to score 80 against England in the second innings of the third Ashes Test at Headingley on Saturday.
The 25-year old Labuschagne became the fifth batsman in the history of Test cricket and fourth as an Australian to deliver two scores in a match that is higher than the total scored by the opposition in a single innings.
The list, however, includes present head coach of Australia Justin Langer.
Labuschagne’s innings of 74 in the first innings was followed by a knock of 67 runs in the second innings at the Headingley. Whereas opposition England were dismissed for mere just 67.
Apart from an Australian batsman, the only performer outside the country to achieve the feat is the former legendary batsman from West Indies Gordon Greenidge
Greenidge hit two hundreds in a 1976 Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, when England collapsed to their lowest total in 71 years against Australia.
Two scores in a Test match higher than an opponent’s total (player, scores, team, opponents, total, venue, year):
- Don Bradman 132/127* AUS v IND (125) Melbourne 1948
- Gordon Greenidge 134/101 WIS v ENG (71) Manchester 1976
- Matthew Hayden 197/103 AUS v ENG (79) Brisbane 2002
- Justin Langer 191/97 AUS v PAK (72) Perth 2004
- Marnus Labuschagne 74/80 AUS v ENG (67) Leeds 2019
