Mathews returns to Sri Lanka squad for England Tests

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has returned to the Test side for the two-match Test series against England, starting from Thursday (January 14).

Angelo Mathews returns to Test side

Mathews, who will play as a specialist batsman in the team, missed Sri Lanka’s recent trip to South Africa due to a hamstring injury.

Earlier Mathews was named in Sri Lanka’s 22-man squad for the series, which was postponed in March after England flew back to home due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both matches of the upcoming series will be held in Galle without fans. The series will be a part of the ICC Test Championship. Though England retain a mathematical chance of reaching this summer’s final, it is almost impossible to see them doing enough to take one of the two top spots. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are currently in the seventh position of the table.

Dimuth Karunaratne will lead the home side in the series, with the likes of Nuwan Pradeep, Roshen Silva, Lakshan Sandakan and the uncapped Ramesh Mendis also being called. Dhananjaya de Silva, Kasun Rajitha, Santhush Gunathilake and Dilshan Madushanka have been left out, despite being part of the South Africa tour.

Oshada Fernando, Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara are all doubts to play in the first Test, despite recovering from their respective injuries. It is understood that they are still struggling for match fitness.

The second Test is scheduled to begin from January 22.
