In what comes as good news to Cricket Australia, McDonald is all set to start a new chapter as team coaching staff as he will be joining Justin Langer to strengthen the Australian cricket team in the build-up to the next year’s T20 World Cup.
The Victoria coach is geared up to join Justin Langer’s national coaching panel and Australia’s future is in safest hands now. Actually, Cricket Australia was already on the hunt for permanent assistant coaches in order to replace the likes of David Saker and Brad Haddin, who quit their posts this year.
McDonald is part of a new variety of Australian coaches rising up to a position of leadership by working up through the sequence of lower positions has been much in demand in international circles.
Played as a specialist all-rounder, he retired in 2016 after playing four Tests for Australia. However, he has had a long career with the Victoria franchise. He was announced as the Rajasthan Royals coach just last week.
He was also announced as the coach of Birmingham Phoenix in England’s new Hundred tournament.
McDonald also became the first coach to bag domestic treble last year, steering Victoria to success in the Sheffield Shield and the one-day tournament and the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.
