Mominul reached his 2000th run in style by hitting Rangana Herath for a big six over long-off in the fifth ball of the 81st over when Sri Lanka took the second new ball. He required 160 runs before the start of the match to complete 2000-run landmark.
It took 26 Tests and 27 innings for the left-hander to reach the figure in almost five years (debut in 2013).
Previously Tamim Iqbal had the record of quickest Bangladeshi to 2000 runs, in 53 innings. Former captain Habibul Bashar and Shakib Al Hasan played 58 innings each for 2000 runs while ex-skipper Mushfiqur Rahim took 67 innings.
Mominul also has the record of fastest Bangladeshi batsman to 1000 Test runs. He took just 21 innings in 11 Tests in one and half years.
Mominul is only the sixth Bangladeshi to cross 2000 Test runs. Former Test captain Mohammad Ashraful took 91 innings to reach two thousand club. Stand-in captain Mahmudullah Riyad (1931 runs before the match) is also approaching 2000 runs.
To be noted, Australian skipper Steve Smith, Sri Lankan former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya also reached into 2000 Test runs in their 47th innings.
