MS Dhoni doubtful for South Africa T20Is
Former Indian skipper and present wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is doubtful for the T20I series against South Africa according to a close source.
Indian World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni is a big topic surrounding Indian cricket for the past few months. There are so many debates and talks going around his future in the team post ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
After the World Cup, India had a T20I series and ODI series in West Indies. However, the former captain opted out himself from the team as he wanted to spend some time in the Indian military camp.
Now again the selection dilemma started as South Africa is going to tour India for a full series of all three formats. Ahead of the series, a BCCI official said that MS Dhoni might be dropped from the T20I squad for the South Africa series too.
“There are only 22 T20 Internationals before India play their first World T20 game and selectors are clear in their vision that it’s time to move forward,” a senior BCCI official privy to developments in selection committee said. They are planning on getting a pool of three keepers ready for limited-overs, especially T20s.”
The official further said that the retirement decision of the former skipper will be his own and the board will not make any impact on that. But they will take some decisions to mold the team considering the next big tournaments.
“Retirement is an individual decision and selectors or for that matter, no one has any right to decide on that front. But they have every right to decide the roadmap for the 2020 World T20 and that’s to give Rishabh Pant maximum chances,” the official explained.
The three-match T20I series will start on September 15th in Dharmasala. The team for the series is expected to be announced on September 4th.
