MS Dhoni reveals why Sam Curran opened the innings for CSK
Chennai Super Kings successfully defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Tuesday. It was perfect revenge taken by CSK in this encounter as they fell prey to SRH in the previous encounter. After defeating David Warner’s side, CSK moved one position up to take the 6th spot in the points table. SRH are fifth in the points table.
Talking about the match, it was the first time, Chennai Super Kings batted first in the ongoing season of the IPL at the United Arab Emirates. Quite surprisingly, Sam Curran was promoted as an opener for Chennai Super Kings, a tactical promotion nobody expected it from the three-time IPL champions, who always come up with loads of surprises.
Sam Curran did complete justice as an opener as he scored a pretty decent 31 off 21 including 3 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Fans were mighty pleased with Sam Curran’s innings as he gave the team a much-needed start. After that, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu 42 and 41 respectively. Ravindra Jadeja played a fantastic cameo as he scored 25 off just 10 deliveries.
CSK posted 167/6 in their quota of 20 overs. Sunrisers Hyderabad were reduced to 147 for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Kane Williamson was the top scorer for SRH with 57 off 39 balls including 7 fours. Jadeja was named man of the match for his all-round show. He picked one wicket to his name. Karn Sharma and Dwayne Bravo picked two wickets each.
Sam Curran is a complete cricketer for us: MS Dhoni
After team’s victory, MS Dhoni heaped praise on Sam Curran for his fantastic contribution as an all-rounder. Besides scoring a decent knock at the top, he also picked up a wicket as he dismissed dangerous David Warner.
“To an extent, yes (these pitches help CSK). But we used an extra spinner because an Indian batter hasn’t done well for us. That’s why Sam Curran went up and it wasn’t fair on Jagadeesan as well to bat at seven or eight. Sam Curran is a complete cricketer for us. You need a seaming all-rounder, he plays the spinners well and he can give us those 15-45 runs. A good left armer is always good to have in the side. You keep wondering whether the ball would come in or leave the batsman.
As the tournament progresses we’ll get more comfortable with the death bowling, which is why we kept Sam away from the death and Thakur and Bravo took over. We’ll get better. We need to think more about the process, the points table will take care of itself. We need to still see where the errors were in this game and what is important is to not brush anything under the carpet just because we won the game,” MS Dhoni concluded.
