MS Dhoni would have definitely played the T20 World Cup if not for coronavirus: Former Indian selector
Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the entire cricket fraternity by shock when he announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His decision came as a surprise to many and had it not been for COVID-19, we would have seen him play for the Indian team in the marquee event.
Meanwhile, the former Indian selector by the name of Sarandeep Singh has disclosed that MS Dhoni would have definitely played the T20 World Cup if not for the virus outbreak. The former selector went on to add saying that MS Dhoni was still fit and there was absolutely no reason for him not to play the sport.
MS Dhoni was the fittest: Sarandeep Singh
He also highlighted that the fitness of players determines how long the professionals can last. Speaking on the same, he stressed the fact that MS Dhoni was the fittest cricketer in the Indian team.
Sarandeep Singh further added that MS Dhoni never took a break from the nets session and also never missed a match due to injury. This is exactly one of the main reasons why MS Dhoni earned so much respect according to Sarandeep Singh.
“Definitely, he would have played (had COVID-19 not interrupted). We were also thinking that he should have definitely played the World T20. He was fit. There was no reason for him to not play.
We always see the fitness of the players first to see how long they can play. And Mahi was the fittest. He never took a break from practice. Even in optional practice, Mahi was there. And you see it never happened that he missed a game because of injury. That’s why he got so much respect from everyone,” said Sarandeep in a candid chat with Sportskeeda.
Sarandeep also spoke about MS Dhoni’s success as a leader. He added that the former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman won every trophy in the international circuit and felt that Dhoni deserved the chance to take part in the T20 World Cup.
Sarandeep also stated that this was the opinion of everyone in the selection committee as well. “We always felt that a player who played so much for India and won so many trophies – there’s not a single trophy he hasn’t won – deserved that chance.
It was my personal opinion and opinion of everyone in the selection committee that MS Dhoni should have played the World T20,” said Sarandeep.
