Mumbai Indians end league stage being on the top

Half-centuries from Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu helped Mumbai Indians to register a 9-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders as they ended the league stage of the ongoing IPL with a table-topping 20 points.

Having asked to bat first at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Mumbai Indians posted a secure total of 173 runs, losing five wickets in 20 overs. Opening batsman Saurabh Tiwary gave Mumbai Indians a perfect start with his 43-ball 53 runs knock. He added 57 runs with captain Rohit Sharma in the second wicket stand where Rohit contributed with 27 runs.

Afterwards, Saurabh made a 61-run third wicket stand with Rayudu before going back to the pavilion in the last ball of the sixteenth over. Wicket-keeper batsman Ambati Rayudu made a 37-ball 63 with six fours and three sixes.

Chasing 174, KKR lost their opener Sunil Narine who has been in great form in recent times with the bat, before scoring any run. Although Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir tackled the situation with a 39-run second wicket stand, they lost some quick wickets afterwards which caused 9-run defeat at the end.

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Hardik Pandya was brilliant with some perfect death bowling which helped his side to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 164.

After a 5-15 head-to-head record against Mumbai Indians, KKR could not finish in the top two and now they will have to travel to Bengaluru to play the eliminator.
