Nehra reacts to Umesh Yadav’s price tag in IPL 2021 auction
India’s fast bowler Umesh Yadav was the subject of discussion after he was purchased by Delhi Capitals for his base price of INR 1 crore. Many experts and fans were of the opinion that India’s quick should have been sold for a big price.
Earlier, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir said that he was absolutely shocked when Umesh was sold for INR 1 crore in the IPL 2021 auction. The 33-year-old pacer played just 2 games in the previous season of the IPL.
He conceded too many runs in his bowling spell of 7 overs. He conceded 83 runs at a shocking economy rate of 11.85. After that, he was subsequently dropped from the Royal Challengers Bangalore set-up.
Based on his form, RCB released him ahead of the mini IPL auction. Delhi Capitals purchased him at his base price.
Nehra disappointed at Umesh’s price tag
Umesh Yadav might have been expensive last season but he didn’t get enough games to prove his worth. He has enough experience in playing the IPL where he took 119 wickets in 121 games. Meanwhile, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra said that he was disappointed at the fast bowler’s price tag.
Speaking on the same lines, Nehra said that Jhye Richardson, Kyle Jamieson who were sold for a massive amount are ‘unproven guys’. “No offence here, but when you talk about Jhye Richardson, Kyle Jamieson – he has done well for New Zealand in Test cricket.
Jhye Richardson has done well for Perth, but somebody like Umesh Yadav, when you talk about Indian fast bowlers, going for 1 crore and these foreigner guys, unproven guys,” Ashish told Star Sports.
The former pacer also said that the likes of Mitchell Starc and Lasith Malinga were pacers who performed well in several leagues across the world and at the same time, highlighted the fact that Jamieson and Richardson were still newcomers.
“Like earlier, I said Mitchell Starc, Lasith Malinga when you see these guys are doing well for the leagues around the world, but over here you are talking about new guys, and Umesh Yadav an experienced guy going only for ₹1 crore, I can’t understand that,” concluded Nehra.
Gambhir has his say on Umesh Yadav’s price tag:
“Umesh Yadav, I was absolutely shocked when he went for Rs 1 crore, there are not many fast bowlers who can bowl 135-140. Yes, he can be a little hot and cold, but when he is hot he can be very hot, but then not many teams went for him,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
“It was a great buy for Delhi because Delhi wanted someone like Umesh Yadav with that kind of an experience because Ishant Sharma is not fit, they had to bowl someone like Tushar Deshpande, where there was not enough experience. Now they have got Umesh Yadav, so hopefully, he can do well for them,” he signed off.
