Nipun Dananjaya retains captaincy for U-19 tri-series in West Indies
Nipun Dananjaya will lead the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the forthcoming tri-nation series in West Indies.
According to the sources in Sri Lanka, the two national selectors-Ashantha de Mel and Vinothen John-along with junior selectors Ranjith Madurasinghe, Farveez Maharoof and coach Hashan Tillakaratne picked a 15-member squad for the West Indies tour, where six matches (and a final) with England as a third team will play the Round Robin tournament.
All matches are scheduled to be played on two different grounds in Antigua. Farveez Maharoof will be a manager and tour selector in West Indies.
Interestingly, Nipun Dananjaya has retained the captaincy though he became 19 years of age about two months ago.
“The cut-off date is September 1, 2019 and luckily he survived the date (his date of birth is September 28, 2000) and therefore he has been chosen to lead the side”, one of the selectors, speaking exclusively, said.
“His selection is now only for the Windies tour but he may be our Under-19 captain for the Under-19 World Cup to be played in South Africa in January-February 2020).”
Unlike the practice in selection of the men’s team, Nipun did not attend the selection meet. “It is not a policy to invite captain for the U-19 selection”, the source put it.
The selected squad has been sent to the ministry for the approval.
