Sometimes as a teammate, sometimes as a selector, sometimes as a commentator, he evaluated cricketers in different roles. However, the most surprising part of his player’s selection was he didn’t put any former cricketer in his Bangladesh XI.
Athar explained the reason behind of his formation of this XI and apologized even if others didn’t like it. Because in his eyes these cricketers are the best among all. They’re contributing the nation a lot and will also contribute in the future. He placed several young cricketers in his XI. He believed that these young cricketers would bring much more to Bangladesh.
He picked young Liton Das with veteran Tamim Iqbal for the opening slot. Then there had been Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim respectively. At no. 5, he selected all-rounder Soumya Sarkar who generally is an opener. Besides, Athar opted for Mohammad Mithun and Mahmudullah Riyad for next two position.
