O’Brien showers praise on Afif ‘the next Gayle or Pollard’

Former Ireland player and current cricket commentator Niall O’Brien believes Afif Hossain could be the next big-hitting star.

Afif will play for Bangladeshi based team Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League 2021. His power-hitting and fielding skills could potentially play big part in the short tournament.

“We love Gayle. We love Pollard. We love these players. But actually it’s unearthing the next Chris Gayle or the next Kieron Pollard. The yougsters are coming through. There’s a guy from Bangladesh – Afif Hossain. Left handed batsman, exceptional. He’s tallish, very slim and he just absolutely smashes the ball over legside,” O’Brien said in a video posted by Bangla Tigers on Facebook.

“Beautiful timer of the ball. I saw him two or three years ago in the BPL in Dhaka and Chattogram. He’s a wonderful player. I’m looking forward to watch him play.”

The 21-year-old has Bangladeshi teammate Mahedi in his team. Both were Bangladesh ODI squad for West Indies series.

In last year’s Bangabandhu T20 Cup, Afif made 188 runs at a strike rate of 146.87 with two fifties in nine matches for Fortune Barishal.

Afif was named as the icon for Bangla Tigers and later vice-captain. Andre Fletcher will lead the team. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Johnson Charles, Mohammad Irfan and Isuru Udana make up a strong line-up.

Bangla Tigers will face Dwayne Bravo’s Delhi Bulls in the third match of the day at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
