Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come a long way. IPL is now known as the richest and most famous T20 league in the world. Exactly 14 years ago, on June 1, 2008, the final of the inaugural edition of the T20 Championship was played between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The 2008 edition saw the dominance of the Rajasthan Royals under Shane Warne as the team won 11 of their 14 league games. The Royals' exploits continued in the final as they recorded a stunning three-wicket win over CSK. The eagerly awaited finale took place in the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy held in Mumbai.
The game started with Warne winning the toss and demanding MS Dhoni & Men put the total on the board. When asked to bat first, CSK was decent with the willow as they managed to total 163 runs on the scoreboard. Suresh Raina was the top run-scorer for the Super Kings with 43 runs from 30 deliveries, followed by Parthiv Patel who smashed 38 runs. For RR, Yusuf Pathan was the bowlers' pick as he picked three crucial wickets from Parthiv, Vidyut Siva Ramakrishnan and Albie Morkel.
Chasing 164, the Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start as they lost their first three wickets in seven overs and staggered on a score of 42 for three. CSK was considered the favorite to win as the bowlers were in control.
However, Pathan and Shane Watson changed the entire dynamic of the game when they penned a stunning 65-run partnership. While Watson made a small but effective 28-run cameo, Pathan went berserk with the willow.
The all-rounder played a great 56-carry shot with just 39 deliveries. His knock included three limits and four maxima at a strike rate of 143.59. Pathan and Watson's exploits helped RR in the script story by winning the first IPL final of the last delivery.
