‘Only a captain like Shane Warne can achieve such success’
Rajasthan Royals won the first edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although not a star-studded team, they won the title left all the teams behind. The team has won the title only once in the one-decade history of the tournament.
But then no one expected Rajasthan to win the title. Because there was no international star in the team except captain Shane Warne. Even being a bowler, Warne didn’t have much to do in the batsman’s T20 game.
Yet Warne did. Not just with bowling, but also with captaincy. Yusuf Pathan, one of the members of the team, thought that Rajasthan became the champion in the first edition due to his leadership. He thought the success of the team was possible because the captain was Shane Warne.
“I played in the IPL under Shane Warne for three years,” Yusuf said, praising Warne live on Instagram.
“I have many memories with him. Before the match he started teaching us how to get the batsman out. We just went to the field and tried it. The batsman would have got out exactly as he said.”
He added, “Unfortunately I hadn’t been able to play with him for more than three years. Without any big players, he led our team to the finals and also won the first edition title. At that time there were very few international stars in Rajasthan, there were more domestic cricketers. Only a captain like Shane Warne can achieve such success with limited weapons.”
