Only Pakistan could have lost from that position : Ramiz Raza
In the first match of the three-match Test series in Manchester, the host England defeated the visiting Pakistan by 3 wickets. Joe Root’s team has set a new record with this victory. Although, the visiting side was in a commanding position from the very start of the match but somehow they lost the match to the batting firmness of Woakes and Buttler.
Former cricketer turned commentator Ramiz Raza expressed disappointment for losing such match. He slammed the tactics and mistakes done by the fielder. He also agreed that the last partnership was disappointing from Pakistans perspective.
” Only Pakistan could have lost from that position. With such a lead they may have thought 250 would be enough to roll over England. With five wickets down and big guns back in the pavilion at 117, allowing over 100-run (139 runs) between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes is the disappointing part. Mind you Buttler was playing for his position in the XI” Ramiz said.
Ramiz also heaped praise on the partnership between Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler at the end which resulted the home side to win the match take a 1-0 lead.
“Pakistan were little confused during that partnership. This has been happening with Pakistan quite often unfortunately. It was a superb partnership no doubt but why did Pakistan allow it? There is a reason their ranking is low in Tests (No 7)” he added.
Ramiz also urged the team management and coaching stuffs to use their experience while suggesting the tactics of the match as he was expected more from the management.
“I would have wanted more out of them in that situation because they all have gone through such games in their careers. When you got a captain who is not in great form, the coaching staff has to be more proactive. Also, they get good perspective sitting outside.
“England were allowed to take easy singles, close to 40 singles were taken by Buttler and Woakes through point. No one told Azhar Ali or to plug that gap. I was frustrated with the field set-up. The bouncer was not tried. The strategy needed a revisit which didn’t happen unfortunately.” He added.
He heaped praise on his countrymen Yasir Shah and Jos Buttler for carrying the match so far and a thrilling one.
” Buttler played Yasir very well. He was aggressive. They had a plan to aggressively tackle Yasir. They put him out of the attack. Lack of faith in Shadab (Khan) also did not help. He was not given much bowling after going in with two leg-spinners.” He added.
