Virat Kohli missed a great opportunity to end the century drought. Kohli did not score a century since the pink ball Test against Bangladesh in the Eden Gardens. The Indian Test captain came very close to overcoming that drought in the Cape Town Test.
India won the toss and elected to bat in the Cape Town Test. On the day of batting failure, Kohli alone took the form of the savior of the team. At one end the Indian skipper tried to hold the innings together, while the others perished to the magnificent fast bowling of the Proteas.
Despite Kohli missing out on a century, it was a well played 79 from the captain. Pujara and Pant provided some form of support with their 43 and 27 respectively.
South Africa finished the first day with 17 runs for the loss of one wicket. The hosts, still trailing by 206 runs, lost captain Dean Elgar. Aiden Markram is unbeaten on 7 off 20 balls and Keshav Maharaj is unbeaten on 6 off 12 balls. Jasprit Bumrah, the lone wicket-taker for India, has yet to concede a run .
