Pacers will win Bangladesh ODI series: Rubel

Spinners shout out and out domination as Bangladesh thrashed Windies in the two-match Test series. But ahead of the three-match ODI series, Bangladesh pacer Rubel Hossain promises it will now be the quick bowlers’ turn in white-ball cricket.

“Of course pacers have the ability, and pacer bowlers have won the team in ODI matches in the past. If you remember the last Windies tour, it was the pacers (to win Bangladesh). We can once again do it for the team,” said Rubel after Bangladesh’s practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

The wickets in the Test series was tailor-made for the spinners so that the Tigers can get the most of the home advantage. The pacers had little to nothing for them. So much so that Bangladesh played the second Test without a single pacer, and all 20 Windies wickets were shared between the spinners.

But ODI cricket is completely a different game ball altogether, and Rubel expects that pacers too will be beneficiary from the sporting wickets. “We (pacers) can win matches even in our home conditions, provided the wicket has something for us. The wickets will not be that much spin-friendly, what we witnessed in the Tests. And with our current pace set-up, we can definitely do well in this condition.”

Rubel, however, seemed a little disappointed with the team management’s decision to play no pacer in the second Test.

“Actually the situation was like that,” explained the Bagerhat-born cricketer. “The wicket was made in favour of the spinners. Still, when spinners do so well that pacers do not get enough opportuinities, it makes us disappointed. But hopefully the ODI wickets will show different character.”

The three-match ODI series will get underway on December 9 with the first match slated to be held in Mirpur.
