Papon hints at introducing youngsters to national side
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon has expressed his will to form teams studded with youngsters in the coming years.
Bangladesh Emerging, led by Saif Hassan, completed an all-format 6-0 sweep over Ireland Wolves in February-March. The likes of Saif himself, Tanvir Islam, Shamim Hossain and Mahmudul Hasan Joy have produced eye-catching performances.
Papon believes there is no lack of players in the pipeline, and has hailed 2020 U-19 World Cup triumph as Bangladesh’s best achievement.
“We have many players in the pipeline. You can’t say anymore that there is no player in the pipeline. I feel the U-19 World Cup is Bangladesh’s best achievement so far,” the BCB boss said on Tuesday.
BCB will soon be making separate teams for different formats, asking the players their preferred formats. The topic has been on the sight after Shakib Al Hasan had asked for leave during Sri Lanka tour to play IPL.
Moreover, Bangladesh are having consecutive international series with COVID restrictions still upheld around the world.
“Some players may not want to play certain formats, or may lack in confidence. If we can manage to know players’ preferred formats by May-June this year, we will build teams according to that.
“They (new players) might not perform like Shakib, Tamim straightway. But they have the capability. You have seen how great the Emerging team was [in Ireland Wolves series]. Their mentality has to be developed. Only then forming a good team in two years will be possible. We will provide world-class facilities if needed.
“I’m not too worried about this but the COVID has taken a year away from us. We didn’t play for long time, let alone Test cricket. But InShaAllah you will see Bangladesh will do lot better in Test cricket after a year,” Papon said.
