Papon questions Liton-Soumya’s role in the team
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan Papon has brought up questions regarding Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar’s role in the recently concluded three-match T20I series against Pakistan. Besides he also talked about the issue of head coach Russell Domingo.
Mushfiqur Rahim skipped the Pakistan T20Is due to personal reasons regarding security concerns. Shakib Al Hasan was also not in the squad as he is now serving one-year ban. So Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad were the most experienced faces in the side.
Liton and Soumya too were being considered as seniors, as they have been in the national side for quite some time now. However, the BCB boss felt like these two cricketers were not sure about what their roles were in the team.
Liton usually opens Bangladesh innings. But in the two matches Bangladesh played against Pakistan (the third one was abandoned due to rain), Liton batted at No.3 and No.4. Soumya too got a new role of batting down the order.
Despite playing international cricket for a long time, Liton and Soumya failed to adapt to their new roles, which according to Papon was very unfortunate.
“No matter how high-profile coaches you bring, no one will come to teach Tamim, Mushfiqur, Shakib, Riyad what their roles are. There is no reason for that. And same goes for Liton-Soumya as well. Now if you have to go and tell them how they need to go about a change and how their playing approach should be, that is very unfortunate.
“You can do this with the newcomers like Afif-Mehidy. But I don’t think there is any reason to do this for players who have been playing for so long,” said the BCB president.
Bangladesh could not put on any fight against Pakistan in the two matches. Tamim got runs in both matches, but still his batting style arose questions. But Papon found coach Russell Domingo’s attitude on Tamim’s batting positive.
“The coach is new. He said he needs to observe how Tamim plays. That’s a good sign. In the past our plans were short-term. But now we have long-term plans, which demand experiments. Still one thing we need to understand if these [the experiments] are happening because of the coach or the captain.”
