Papon shows dissatisfaction over Bangladesh’s spin dependence
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon has expressed his dissatisfaction over Bangladesh’s spin dependence in the Tests. He has expressed frustration that the pacers are not given enough opportunities despite having confidence in them.
Bangladesh played only one fast bowler in Chattogram Test. There was criticism of having only one pacer. However, the scenario wasn’t changed in Dhaka Test too as there was only one fast bowler again.
Papon thinks Bangladesh fast bowlers are better than other spinners except Shakib Al Hasan. “We have no doubt about one thing – the pacers are better than the spinners we have. We have a handful of spinners,” he said without hesitation.
“You leave out Shakib. Besides, how many spinners? Two or three. But we have a lot of good pacers. There are five pacers. Why aren’t they playing? Thy were supposed to play in Chattogram but did not play. Here at least two would play, they confirmed. But why didn’t they play? I want clarity from everyone, of course. I will ask everyone, not just the captain and the coach.”
There are several fast bowlers in the country now on the radar of the national team. However, the reliance on spin in Tests does not seem to be diminishing. “Since the Afghanistan Test [in 2019], all I have heard is spinning wicket. There was a time when we were fairly good at spin, because our pacers were not good. For the last three years we have been constantly thinking about how to make pace-friendly wickets. It’s not that we’ve improved a lot, but we’ve improved a lot in domestic cricket,” he said.
“As a result, if you look at our domestic cricket or the tournaments that we did, our fast bowlers bowled well. We have a lot of pacers now. With 5 pacers, the place of all-rounders has been closed in the team. The slot of all-rounder was filled due to 5 pacers, but the pacers aren’t playing. Then why we took them. So if you say team selection, I have nothing to say,” he concluded.
