Ponting reveals the masterplan to get Steve Smith’s wicket
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting on Friday hailed Steve Smith ‘genius’ in terms of batting consistency. However, he went on to add that Smith can be dismissed only if he is bowled outside the off stump.
Steve Smith, who had to miss the third Ashes Test because of concussion. He made a sensational comeback in the 4th Test at Old Trafford where he played an incredible knock of 211 to help Australia post a humongous 497/8.
Smith entered history books with his 26th Test century as he edged past Virat Kohli’s 25th Test hundred. Also, Smith scored his third Ashes double hundred as he batted for 513 minutes, and smashed 24 fours and two sixes in his knock.
“You hear all sorts of words, ‘genius’ is one that comes to mind,” the former Australian skipper who won 2 ODI World Cup as captain told cricket.com.au.
“A remarkable innings again. It’s his application to what he does. He just doesn’t make any mistakes. His concentration levels are obviously unbelievably good,” said the Punter.
Steve Smith has been an absolute nightmare for the opposition and when Ricky Ponting was asked how Steve Smith can be dismissed, he gave a very interesting opinion. Ponting said that Smith has been really impressive when taking on the bowlers especially when they bowl straight to him.
“He’s only been out nine times lbw in his last 99 innings, so you know if you’re bowling straight you’re not going to get him out,” he said.
The only way to ruffle Steve Smith’s feathers is that the bowlers should try and pose a threat to Smith outside of his bat. “The one thing you have to do is try and challenge the outside of his bat. He doesn’t miss it on the inside.”
World’s No. 1 Test batsman Steven Smith is now being compared to legendary countryman Sir Donald Bradman for being Australia’s best batsman in today’s world.
“Even what Smithy is doing now is remarkable, to think how good Bradman must have been to be a third again better than what Steve Smith’s doing at the moment is ridiculous,” Ricky Ponting said.
