Prithvi Shaw asked to shed a few more kilos before making comeback to Indian team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the squad for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. The WTC final is scheduled to be held on June 18, Southampton. Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw who recently gained form with the bat failed to make the cut in India’s squad.

Prithvi Shaw asked to lose weight before making rebound to Indian team

The 21-year-old was recently ignored by the Indian selectors and as per the reports, the youngster has been asked to reduce weight to become as fit as a fiddle in order to be in contention for the team selection.

The young prospect last donned the Indian outfit in Adelaide Test against Australia in 2020, where he came up with a string of low scores 0 & 2. Based on his performance in only one game, he was overlooked by the selectors for the home series against England in all three formats.

Despite being in midas touch with the bat during IPL 2021, the opener was still not considered for the Test squad. For the WTC final, the Indian selectors picked a large contingent of 24 players. BCCI source disclosed the reason for Shaw’s omission.

“Prithvi is still very slow across the turf for a 21-year-old. He needs to shed a few more kilos. He also had concentration issues while fielding in Australia. Shaw has been working hard since he returned from Australia. He has the example of Rishabh Pant right in front of him. If Pant can turn things around in a few months, Prithvi too can do it,” A BCCI source said as reported by The Times of India.

The source also added that Prithvi Shaw is too good a talent to be overlooked for long, and will soon make a rebound to the Indian team.

“He has to sustain this form for a few more tournaments. He has often been picked on the basis of one good series and then he has struggled in international cricket. He is too good a player to be ignored for long,” the source said.
