South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of IPL 2018 with a lower-back stress reaction and it is a big blow for his IPL team Delhi Daredevils who are yet to win an IPL trophy.
Rabada, retained by Delhi Daredevils using the Right To Match Card for INR 4.2 crores, felt tightness and discomfort during the Johannesburg Test of the recently-concluded Australia series. Subsequent scans revealed the injury, which will sideline the 22-year-old for up to three months.
Rabada’s international season only finished on Tuesday morning, when he bowled just three overs on the final day of the Australia Tests and later admitted to feeling relieved that Vernon Philander had run through the Australian line-up so that he did not have to bowl.
The young fast bowler said after the Test: “Something I have to think about and plan moving forward is how to have some time off. It is very important because you ultimately want to play for 10 to 15 years and you’ve got to have some sort of plan. You can’t just drift through it.”
A replacement for Rabada will have to be approved by the IPL technical committee. Delhi Daredevils already have Trent Boult in their fast-bowling group with Indian options in Mohammed Shami and Avesh Khan. Chris Morris, Daniel Christian are other medium-pace all-rounders in the squad.
IPL 2018 will kick off on 7 April and Delhi Daredevils’ first match will be on 8 April against Kings XI Punjab.
