Rahi fixes a World Cup spot following heroism against Ireland
It was come as a surprise for many when Bangladeshi pacer Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi was picked for the 15-man World Cup squad. As at that time, he didn’t play a single international match for Bangladesh.
That’s why many were thinking he should be replaced by the experienced pacer Taskin Ahmed when Taskin was added in the squad for the Tri-nation series in Ireland. But with his great bowling performance against Ireland on Wednesday, Rahi confirmed his position in the 15-man World Cup squad. So, eventually Taskin will have to come back home after the Ireland tour.
Taskin played in the first match of the tour against Ireland Wolves but it was just a warm-up match. He took 3 wickets in that match giving away 66 runs. But he hadn’t play any Tri-nation series match yet. On the other hand, in the warm-up match or the first match of the Tri-nation series Rahi wasn’t picked in the main XI. So it raised a question that Rahi might be omitted from the World Cup squad.
In the addition to this, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan Papon made the situation more questionable when he said Taskin’s addition would increase the variation in the team. But after the heroics from Rahi against Ireland solved all the questions at a blink.
Rahi registered a 5-wicket haul just in his second match of his international career to help Bangladesh picking up a 6-wicket comfortable victory against Ireland on Wednesday, May 15. Rahi was also adjusted man of the match for his superb performance.
BCB selector Habibul Bashar praised Rahi much after the performance and it was clear that Rahi stayed in the World Cup squad. “Jayed’s 5-wicket haul is a blessing for Bangladesh. Because he will fly to England for World Cup with much confidence along with him. His good performance will help Bangladesh to perform better in the World Cup obviously,” BCB selector said.
“We picked Jayed in the World Cup squad as wicket-taker. He was gone for runs, but he took the important 5 wickets against Ireland. What we wanted from him, he fulfilled it completely. He will surely want to replicate this kind of great bowling in the World Cup as well.”
So the performance from Rahi surely gave him the permanent spot in the World Cup squad as well as will diminish the questions which was raised by many when Rahi was picked for the Bangladesh World Cup squad.
Bangladesh will play against West Indies in the Tri-nation series final on Thursday, May 17 in Dublin.
