Ranatunga wants an investigation on 2011 World Cup final

World cup winning captain of Sri Lanka, Arjuna Ranatunga has hinted that the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was fixed. [নিউজটি বাংলায় পড়ুনঃ ২০১১ বিশ্বকাপের ফাইনাল নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুললেন রানাতুঙ্গা]

Lately the former skipper has been in a war of words with another Sri Lankan cricketing legend Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara questioned Ranatunga about the 2009 series against Pakistan in Pakistan. Ranatunga was a part of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board back then. Sangakkara asked him why did the board authorize the series amidst security concerns. On that series the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists on their way to the ground and many Sri Lankan cricketers got injured. Current Bangladeshi batting coach Thilan Samaraweera was shot in that incident. Ranatunga was insulted with these remarks and fired back with even more controversial statement of his own.

“If Mr. Sangakkara wants an inquiry into the tour of Pakistan then they should have one. But I think we should also inquire what happened to the Sri Lanka Team during the 2011 World Cup final. I think this is something that the Sports Minister should look into rather than concentrating on fitness issues,” said the 53 year old.

“Investigations should be done on the World Cup final where Sri Lanka lost to India,” said Ranatunga.“The ministers who are talking now need to make sure their actions speak louder than their words. The time has come now for these players to confess on what happened and investigations to be done.”

He further said,“I was also in India at the time and I was heartbroken after the loss while I also had doubts about it. I will open up about all this very soon with proof. Therefore if you are investigating, this is what you need to investigate about.”

Sri Lanka had made four changes in the squad for the final match, which raised some eyebrows. Sri Lanka posted a challenging score of 275 in the final, thanks to a brilliant century by Mahela Jayawardene. But they were toppled by Gautam Gambhir’s and MS Dhoni’s resilient innings.

At the time of the match nobody raised any questions about match fixing. If there indeed was any fixing happening in the match and Ranatunga knew about it, the question is why did he keep quiet for the past six years.
