Rohit becomes leading run-scorer in T20Is

India’s stand-in captain Rohit Sharma scripted history today as he became the leading run-scorer in T20Is. He now has 2288 runs to his fruitful T20I career with 4 centuries, which is most by any player in this format.

He has also scored most fifties in T20Is as well. He beat Guptill’s record of 14 fifties and went on to score his 15th half-century in T20Is. Previously, New Zealand’s Martin Guptill dominated the T20I run charts as he was firm on top of the list with 2272 runs but Rohit’s blazing half-century against the Black Caps in the do-or-die contest pushed him to the top spot.

However, the race for the top spot is still on as three players are waiting to make the most use of the chances to better effect. Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik stands third on the list of leading run-scorers in T20Is with 2263 runs. India’s Virat Kohli is also not too far from touching the apex as he has scored 2167 runs.

Rohit Sharma joins Michael Clarke and Sarfraz Ahmed to notch up 12 wins after 14 T20Is as captain. That’s an outstanding record. He has also gone past 100+ sixes in the truncated version of the game. He is also the only Indian player to score 200 plus sixes in ODIs and 100 plus sixes in T20Is.

“Very pleased to see how we bowled, and we were quite clinical with the bat as well. We have quality in our side, but we executed our plans better today, after learning from our mistakes. It’s important to understand the mistakes that we made, it’s been a long tour for everyone,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.

“So we didn’t want to put a lot of pressure on the boys, just go in there with a clear mind. It’s going to be a cracker of a game in the 3rd T20I, but nothing to take away from New Zealand, they’re still a quality side,” he added.
