RPS’ coach Fleming wails for Ben Stokes after single run defeat
Rising Pune Supergiant’s coach Steven Fleming lamented the absence of charismatic English all – rounder Ben Stokes after their agonizing single run defeat against Mumbai Indians in quest of their first ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Sunday.
Rising Pune Supergiants failed to catch a paltry 129 runs total scored by Mumbai Indians after batting first. Restricted to 128 runs, RPS had to accept a heartbreaking one run defeat at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.
Speaking at the post match press – briefing, Steven Fleming said, “We were a batsman short with Ben Stokes not being part. We were playing an extra bowler and were aware of it when chasing 130 runs. The best way to have gone about the chase was to build a couple of partnerships.”
“We saw Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith come close to doing that but we lost wickets at key times and it kept Mumbai Indians in the game” – Fleming rued.
Rising Pune Supergiants record bid of IPL – 2017 auction English all – rounder Ben Stokes has been instrumental towards team’s success in this season. He scored 316 runs at an average of 31.6 and grabbed 12 wickets but he had to leave for national team duties after the last league game against Kings XI Punjab.
“There are gains by being together as a side. You also relish the opportunities to play finals in pressure situations. We did not spend too much time lamenting that. From his point of view, he would have loved this situation. He is a big game player” – Steven Fleming said.
