Seeing Kohli, something triggered in my head: Andre Russell
West Indies destructive all-rounder Andre Russell is at the top of the list undoubtedly of Caribbean team after Chris Gayle in hard hitting in international cricket. Russell is commonly known as hitting the opponent team bowlers in the death over and bringing the match in their favor.
Whether in the country’s jersey or in the Indian Premier League (IPL) – the Caribbean star has saved the team from danger innumerable times. In the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders rely on Russell’s death over hitting.
In an interview with the Knight Riders, Russell revealed that 48 off 13 balls against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore was a mystery. “Dinesh Karthik is out after hitting one or two boundaries,” said Russell.
“He hit the ball and I think Virat Kohli took the catch. With the catch, Kohli started gesturing to the KKR cricketers’ wives and supporters. Seeing that, something triggered in my head like, hell no this is not over.”
KKR needed 53 off 24 balls to win. Navdeep Saini dismissed Karthik. Russell came to the wicket. In his words, “When Shubman Gill came to me, I told him, no matter which bowler bowls, I will crack today. No one will be exempted. So strike me as much as possible. He replies ‘anything you say big man’, Boom. After that a flood of sixes flowed.”
Shubman Gill and Russell made a 53-run partnership. Shubman made 3 runs off just 3 balls in that pair. And Russell gave a flood of sixes. He added, “I was not even looking at the scoreboard because sometimes you get carried away with the crowd and everything. Because if the focus is lost from the game. After hitting every six, I was going to Shubman. I was punching. I was taking a deep breath. So that I can stay as calm as possible. There was no question of wasting energy by looking around.”
