The heartthrob of each and every Indian cricket fan, the dazzling former opening batsman of team India, Virender Sehwag has said that the legendary former Indian skipper and current wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni must play for India in the limited overs format at least until the end of next year’s International Cricket Council’s Cricket World Cup.
Sehwag feels that Dhoni is still the best choice as a frontline wicket-keeper when it comes to the biggest stage like the cricket world cup. The next in line young wicket-keeper, the 20-year-old Rishabh Pant is too much inexperienced for this type of tournament according to the Multan of Sultan.
Many people are not sure whether Dhoni should start in any of world cup matches because of his worrying performances with the bat in the past couple of years. In the recently concluded ODI series against England, when the required rate was around 8 runs per over, Dhoni played with a strike rate of around 70. Former great Sunil Gavaskar criticized him
heavily after this innings.
“In my personal opinion, MS Dhoni should continue till the 2019 World Cup. Even if you play Pant in ODIs from now, he won’t be able to play more than 15-16 ODIs till the World Cup which is far less compared to Dhoni, who has played over 300 ODIs. I would want Dhoni to continue till the World Cup,” Sehwag said as quoted by India Today.
Dhoni always had an unorthodox batting technique which many cricket pundits criticized and said he won’t be successful in international cricket. But Dhoni had other plans as he proved everyone wrong and was the world number one batsman for many years throughout his career and the rest, as they say, is history.
But one can’t ignore Dhoni’s tactical genius when he is on the field in tensed situations. Yes, Kohli has a great potential as a skipper but still, he seeks for crucial time advice from Dhoni in pressured situations. And those valuable inputs of Dhoni many times go unnoticed when India wins a match from a tight situation.
