Sehwag suggests new opening pair for RCB

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has suggested that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli should come back to his natural position at No. 3 and give Mohammed Azharuddeen the chance to open with inform Devdutt Padikkal.

Rajat Patidar, playing at No. 3 at the moment, struggled to get going in four matches he played in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). He scored just 72 runs at the strike-rate of 114.51.

While, 27-year old Azharuddeen had been in great form recently. In January this year, he smashed a 37-ball hundred in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy- the second-fastest century in the history of the tournament. RCB roped in him for his base price of ₹20 lakh in this year’s auction.

“I think Virat should come back to his original position of number three, and consider Mohammad Azharuddin for the opening role. He looks like a better option right now than Patidar. Kohli should be No.3, with Maxwell and ABD to follow,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag also pointed out that if RCB do that, this would give them a world-class middle order who are capable of turning around a match at any time. “It would mean that you will have three world-class players in the middle-order. If Devdutt Padikkal and Azharuddin don’t do the job at the top, then these three are capable enough to bail the side out of trouble,” Sehwag added.

RCB will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their next match on May 3 in Ahmedabad.
