Before the last match of the Zimbabwe series in 2020, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza suddenly announced that this was his last match as the captain of the Bangladesh ODI team. However, Mashrafe has not yet retired from international cricket. But he did not play in the national team after that match. The selectors also did not consider Mashrafe, Mashrafe himself did not express his desire.
But the pacer has continued playing in domestic cricket. The captain of Sylhet Strikers is in great rhythm with the ball in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). However, at the age of 39, there is no possibility of returning to the national team. However, if the board agrees, the selection panel has no objection to let Mashrafe play the farewell match in the national team jersey.
During the BPL, two selectors Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Abdur Razzak were questioned about Mashrafe's BPL performance. At this time, it was asked whether there is any idea of giving Mashrafe a chance to play in any match for his official retirement from international cricket.
Razzak said, “It is the decision of the entire board. These are special decisions. If the board takes this decision, we have no objection. We want the players to retire from the field. It will look good and people will be happy. It is entirely the board's decision. We will respect if the board takes this decision. Not only in the case of Mashrafe, but everyone. For those who have played in international cricket for a long time, it is good for everyone. The player will also have a memory to cherish. Leaving the cricket from field is not bad.”
Nannu said like all other cricketers, the selection panel of the national team is keeping an eye on Mashrafe's performance in the BPL. He said, “All those who play in domestic cricket are taken into consideration. No one will be blindsided. Whoever needs we will think about him.”
Even though he is not playing regularly, Mashrafe is the highest wicket-taker among the domestic cricketers in the 9th season of BPL so far. Evaluating Mashrafe's performance, Nannu added, “Legendary cricketers always act like legends. There is something for youngsters to learn from Mashrafe. How to perform at this age, maintain your fitness. There is much to learn. It’s inspirational for the youth.”
