‘Shakib is always our megastar’

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon has hailed Shakib Al Hasan following the latter’s performance against West Indies in the first ODI.

Shakib, Hasan shared seven wickets between them

Shakib played his first ODI since August 2019 and made his first international appearance since suspension. Quite fittingly, the ace all-rounder won the player of the match award on his comeback.

The world No.1 all-rounder claimed stunning figures of 4 for 8 in 7.2 overs in hosts’ six-wicket triumph against West Indies.

Shakib made 19 off 43 with the bat. Papon hopes his old form will start to return with time.

“Shakib is always our megastar. No one has ever had doubt in that. He bowled extraordinarily. I had no such doubt whether he would perform well or not,” Papon told the reporters.

“His batting has not been the same as before. His performance in the World Cup was the best from what I have seen. It may take some time to get into that form.”

West Indies were bundled for 122 runs in 32.2 overs. Contrarily, Bangladesh batted 33.5 overs to take down the target. Papon has hinted of better tracks after this match.

“The pitch was supposed to be sporting. But the rain in addition to the weather made it bit difficult to play on. Hopefully the pitches will play better in the next matches,” the BCB boss said.

When asked on Tamim Iqbal’s first match as full-time captain, Papon said, “Yes, I liked Tamim’s captaincy. The fielding, bowling – everything was good.”
