Shakib opens up about batting position
Shakib Al Hasan has opened up on the issue of his batting position following a match winning bowling performance (4 for 8) in the first ODI against West Indies on Wednesday (Jannuary 20).
Though he had found great success batting at No.3 position in the past, the current team management decided to play him at 4 in the ongoing West Indies.
Such decision didn’t go well with everyone, as one part within the country’s cricket fraternity has been critical of it, claiming that Shakib should have been given the opportunity to bat at one-down.
Shakib, who had scored 606 runs in 8 matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 batting at No.3, told the media on Wednesday that it was completely the team management’s call to play him at No.4.
“Look, the coach, captain and team management have come to a decision. We have to respect it. It’s not a big issue whether I agree with it or not. I always try to play for the team. To me, team success is more important than individual achievement. So I don’t think it [change of batting position] will make a big difference,” said Shakib.
Najmul Hossain Shanto is the one who replaced Shakib at No.3 position in the first ODI. However, he failed to capitalize on the chance, and could score just one off 9 balls.
But Shakib believes Shanto needs more opportunities to prove his mettle.
“You can not judge anyone on the basis of on match. He is batting at No.3, and I hope he will do well. Give him a year, then you can ask the same question again. Don’t ask it already after one match.”
