Shakib opens up about Mashrafe-Mahmudullah’s absence

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been dropped from the ODI squad for the first time, while Mahmudullah Riyad has been also left out of the Test squad. In an interview given to television channel Ekattar, Shakib expressed his hope that both Mashrafe and Riyad will return to the team with their performance. Although most of the supporters has been disappointed not to see the inclusion of the two, Shakib is respecting the decision of the selectors.

“It’s a matter of the entire team management and the selectors,” he said about Riyad. “However, being dropped in one series does not mean being dropped at all. The way he has always fought and comeback, it may happen in the next series. There are enough breaks before the next Test, in this time there will be an opportunity to think anew. If it is domestic cricket, the selectors will get a chance to see the performance.”

Mashrafe is not in the team, but Bangladesh will play ODIs – that’s a very rare scene in Bangladesh cricket. This time without Mashrafe, it will be ‘difficult’ for Shakib too. “It’s a difficult time, but that’s the reality,” he said. “Since he is still ready, the performance in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup was good as expected. If he plays well in the Premier League or in ODI format, there is no reason for the selectors or the team management not to think about him.”

Recently, Fawad Alam of Pakistan returned to the national team after 10 years and scored a century. Shakib believes that Mashrafe-Riyad will make a comeback like Fawad.

“The opportunity is open until a player retires,” Shakib said. “If I give the example of Fawad Alam of Pakistan, his second Test century came after 10 years after his first Test century. Since he has been able to do so, if they also have the desire and the performance is good, the opportunity can come.”
