Shakib targets overseas improvement

A day after the appointment of Test captaincy, Shakib Al Hasan has shared his thoughts on being named Bangladesh’s Test captain for the second time.

Shakib was the Test captain during 2009-2011. Out of the nine Tests he captained, Bangladesh only once, that too against a second-string West Indies. He was sacked after Zimbabwe tour in 2011.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reappointed Shakib as Test captain, handing over from Mushfiqur Rahim. Shakib hopes his team does well in the upcoming days.

“The job will be easier this time, definitely. Most of our cricketers are performing almost every time. The captain doesn’t have to do much when they are doing well. I hope everyone does well together, which will only do good to the team’s cause,” he said on Monday.

Bangladesh have been a strong side at home over the three years. But performances in New Zealand and South Africa were disappointing even though Bangladesh earned a win in their 100th Test in Colombo.

As per FTP (Future Tours Program), Bangladesh have away series against West Indies and Australia next year. New captain Shakib wants to show improvement away from home.

“It is a new responsibility. We have been doing well in Tests in the last few years, winning against England, Sri Lanka and Australia. I will try to improve upon this. It is hard to say how different this stint is going to be, but it will be important to get accustomed to the situation.

“I think we feel slightly more comfortable playing at home and since we don’t have much success outside, maybe it becomes harder. But this is also an opportunity to do well. If we can start this, why not? Someone has to do it. Although it is not going to be easy. But a lot of things are possible with the way our team has shaped up,” he explained.
