Shamsur to be included in HP squad
Shamsur Rahman, despite being the highest scorer of 2015/16 season in Bangladesh’s domestic circuit with 1644 runs, wasn’t included in the 30-member Bangladesh preliminary squad for the forthcoming home series against England in October. [Read in Bangla: এইচপি স্কোয়াডে ডাক পাচ্ছেন শামসুর]
Shamsur’s omission came as a perfect shocker to many. But on Friday, BCB’s new selection committee chairman Minhajul Abedin Nannu explained why they didn’t keep Shamsur in the preliminary squad. “We had five slots for the openers in the squad. Shamsur was at number six on our list. So we couldn’t take him,”said Nannu.
Earlier Shamsur wasn’t even included in the High Performance (HP) Unit squad as well. There are currently three openers in the HP Unit set-up — Shadman Islam, Mehedi Hasan Maruf and Abdul Mazid. And now the selectors are mulling to add Shamsur as the fourth opener.
“We will include Shamsur Rahman in the batting order of the HP Unit. He is still under our radar, but for the time being the HP squad will be the best for him,” said the chief selector Nannu.
It can be noted that Shamsur has so far played 6 Tests, 10 ODIs and 9 T20Is for Bangladesh national cricket team. But he has been out of the national squad since the Zimbabwe series in 2014.
