Sharma’s last chance in Test cricket

Rohit Sharma has come back to the India Test squad following his rich vein of form in the recent limited-overs series against Windies at home.

This is nothing new, either for Sharma or for the Indian cricket followers. Whenever Sharma strikes rich form in ODIs and T20Is, a part of cricket pundits demand Sharma back in the longest format as well.

The same happened exactly a year ago, when Sharma was lighting it up against Sri Lanka at home and the case was made for his inclusion in the Test squad for the South African tour. But what followed thereafter would be something Sharma never wanted to save in his memory.

India team management became so overwhelmed that they brought Sharma back in the squad at expense of a seasoned overseas campaigner like Ajinkya Rahane. The gamble did not work, as Sharma could able to score only 78 runs in four innings at Cape Town and Centurion.

The result was inevitable. Sharma was dropped for the third Test. Since then, he has yet to play another Test match.

However, another opportunity awaits Sharma in the upcoming four-match series against Australia, starting from December 6 in Adelaide. Sharma is currently at his best and mentally seems to be in a terrific space. His partnership with Virat Kohli could also come in handy for India to get the better of the Aussies Down Under.

But what if Sharma fails again? Will he get another chance ever? It does not look like that, with India booming with so many young talents, waiting at the pipeline for their opportunities to come. So one can be sure that it’s Sharma’s last chance in Test cricket.
