Six World Cup winning players to play against Zimbabwe
Akbar Ali has just returned home last week after leading Bangladesh Under-19 team to the World Cup triumph in South Africa. But he has hardly any time to rest, as he will have to return Dhaka on Monday (Februray 17) from his hometown to play against Zimbabwe.
Not only Akbar Ali, but five more players from the World Cup winning squad may get to play against Zimbabwe.
However, this will not be in the series proper. Rather the Young Tigers will represent Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) XI in a practice match against Zimbabwe at BKSP in Savar. The two-day practice match will be held on February 18 and 19.
Apart from Akbar, the other five players to get called up from the World Cup winning side are: Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Shahadat Hossain, Parvez Hossain.
In explanation to why these young cricketers were kept in the practice match squad, selector Habibul Bashar said, “We are taking five-six players from the Under-19 World Cup. Most of our players are among cricket. Everyone is playing in the BCL. So we did not want to give more burden on them.”
He then also added, “As it is just a practice match, we can see how they fare [against an international side]. Besides Shoriful was also in the A team.”
Meanwhile Zimbabwe arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday. They will start the series with a lone Test, and then there will be three ODIs and two T20Is in the series.
