SL earn draw, but India win another series

Sri Lanka have earned a magical draw in the third Test in Delhi with losing just two wickets on the final day. But India have won the series 1-0, the record ninth consecutive series win.

Sri Lanka lost three wickets for 31 in their run-chase of 410 on day four after India posted 246/5 in their second innings. It was a win-win like situation for India when the visitors lost early wickets.

Angelo Mathews’ dismissal early in the fifth day put Sri Lanka to further trouble. Skipper Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva bounced back and put on a 112-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Chandimal made 90-ball 36.

Dhananjaya brought up his third century in 188 balls. He became only the ninth Sri Lankan to score a hundred in the third innings. After putting up a 58-run stand with Roshen Silva, Dhananjaya retired hurt after scoring a match-saving 119 off 219 balls including 15 fours and a six.

Debutant Roshen confirmed Sri Lanka’s draw with sharing an unbeaten 94-run partnership with Niroshan Dickwella. Roshen made 74* runs from 154 deliveries with 11 boundaries after scoring a duck in the first innings. Dickwella made 72-ball 44 with 6 fours.

Sri Lanka posted 299/5 in 103 overs, the highest total by a visiting team in the fourth inningd in India. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets for 81 runs.

India still won the series by 1-0. It’s their ninth consecutive Test series win, equalling Australia and England’s streak.
