So near still out of sight

Well it was a difference between the cup and the lips . New Zealand scrapped through scoring 248/8 in 47.1 overs responding to Bangladesh scoring 244 all out at Oval in the day night match.

Sometimes rainbows appear too close to touch but can not be touched, Yesterday team tigers in a tight match against New Zealand was smelling victory . People started biting nails and scratching heads. Bangladesh went as close as grabbing wickets of two tail enders ten and jack. But they had at least 25- 30 runs short in their account . Kiwis hobbled across the rope in the 47.1 overs winning by 2 wickets. Bangladesh left Oval heads high . Sometimes there is glory in defeat as well.

The match which New Zealand was cruising for a comfortable win was turned up side down by some excellent late over bowling . Some strategic errors made at crucial stages , bad strokes of luck let Kiwis Bangladesh to the post. Bangladesh and England would appear against each other in their next match wining and losing a piece from two matches.

Teams came to Oval with great confidence after winning their respective first matches against Sri Lanka and South Africa. New Zealand was 2015 world cup losing finalist at MCG against Australia  , Bangladesh was made to loose the quarter final against India also at MCG. Bangladesh also beat New Zealand comprehensively in the last Champions trophy held in England.

Much was being talked about high scoring matches happening too often , defending less than 300 plus scores too difficult. Spirited Bangladesh almost defended below par score 244 . With a little bit of luck and bit more aggression from Mashrafee could see them home. But it must not be denied that Bangladesh possibly scored 25 to 30 runs less . A bit complacent New Zealand almost made it a mess in chasing .

Willamson was right is letting Bangladesh bat after winning the toss on a fresh , green top oval wicket under cloud cover. He counted much on his talented fast bowlers getting him early wickets . They could not do that exactly as was seen in their run away victory against Sri Lanka . But several Bangladesh batsmen getting start but throwing away the towels too early for comfort made his task easy. Tamim (24)  and Soumya (25)  started carefully aggressive . Soumya appeared to be carrying his sweet touch till his brain freeze let him try a cross batted  nothing shot against Henry. He had his furniture behind rattled .

Tamim for a reason for a while does not seem to be in his brilliant best . Is he still Traumatized from Christchurch crisis. His batting is not talking usual flamboyance for a while . If either Soumya or Tamim could carry on letting others bat around them Bangladesh could build castle more fortified.  Perhaps it is time Liton given opportunity for a match or two resting Tamim to rediscover. Shakib continued his sweet form . He was working up yet another solid foundation with Mushfique. But a horrible mix up, caused Mushfique running himself out when the partnership was just blooming at 50. Mithun (26)  was also looking good . Shakib  (64) cruised to yet another swashbuckling half century . But neither Shakib nor Mithun could keep the tempo going. Mahmudullah and Mosaddeq could not repeat the heroics of the previous match. Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals . A good looking 29 by Saifuddin at late order could take the score to 248 all out in 49.2 overs considered 30 runs too less .

Yet Bangladesh managed removing the Kiwis openers Guptil and Munero early. But two world class batsmen Williamson and Talor applied all their skills blunting Bangladesh attack clinically till Miraj with his teasing line and length stuck double blow in an over . Williamson left after pitting up 105 runs partnership with Taylor for the 3rd wicket . Latham scored a duck. Part time spinner Mosaddeq getting Taylor (84) caused moving and shaking the Kiwi camp. Suddenly the match came to life . Mashrafee should have attacked letting Mustafiz and Saifuddin bowl instead of him coming in. Mosadeeq and Saifuddin taking three more wicket made the match a tight finish . New Zealand won by 2 wickets at 47.1 over .  All wondred if Bangladesh had another 30 runs in the account. If Rubel appeared with his tore crushing  in swinging Yorkers .

New Zealand eclipse Bangladesh in tough battle

Bangladesh has lot to ponder . Should Tamim be rested for a match or two ? Should Mashrafee let Rubel play against England in his place ? Bangladesh should not loose close matches like this leaving their horses for the courses warming up the bench . None remains indispensible for ever . Circumstances alter cases.
