Sodhi suggests Hardik Pandya as India captain against Sri Lanka
Former India cricketer Reetinder Singh Sodhi has suggested Hardik Pandya as India’s limited-overs captain in absence of regular captain Virat Kohli in the Sri Lanka tour which is scheduled to start from July 13.
Earlier this week, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly announced that India would go to Sri Lanka to play limited-overs series. He also confirmed that they will send completely a different team there as compared to the one which will travel for England for five-match Test series against the hosts and ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand.
So, there will be much young players, uncapped players and some of experienced players also in the team undoubtedly. In Sri Lanka, India will play three-match ODI series and three-match T20I series.
Speaking to India News, Sodhi said Hardik could lead India in the series as he’s enough experiences in international cricket.
“Who will captain – Hardik Pandya? I feel he can be given experience at the helm because he has played very good cricket. The best thing is we have so many options that we can put together a second Indian team,” said Sodhi.
“One team will be playing Test cricket, Virat Kohli and his boys. And the other team will have the likes of Hardik Pandya and Chahal [Yuzvendra], and aspirants like Devdutt Padikkal and Ravi Bishnoi can get chances. So, it is a very good move by Sourav Ganguly and the BCCI. This tour can prove to be the ace in the pack before the T20 World Cup,” added Reetinder Sodhi.
He also added that the tour will be for youngsters as they can get the chance to fulfill their dreams. Also Kohli will keep his eye on the series from England for T20 World Cup selection. “This tour will be a blessing for all these youngsters. It is possible selectors might be eyeing guys like Harpreet Brar. So, Virat Kohli will be putting in the hard yards in England but his eyes will also be in Sri Lanka because he will definitely want to judge which other players can be considered for the T20 World Cup,” concluded Reetinder Sodhi.
