Sourav about to leave captaincy due to ‘April fool’ fun by Sachin, Harbhajan
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has been hailed as one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. According to many, he has laid the foundation for the success of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
On the captaincy pitch he has repeatedly faced various bouncers of controversy, but has never been overwhelmed. However, Sourav had to leave the captaincy because of his teammates!
Sourav himself told the shocking news. And the main culprits behind this ‘incident’ were stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh.
Sourav was not getting a run at all at that time. As a result, there was a lot of impact on the team. Sourav himself understood that if there is no regular run in the bat, the captaincy will be tolled. The mind was scattered.
In this situation, one day the teammates rushed to the dressing room with the newspaper. As it was written, Sourav blamed his teammates in front of the media. He said that the team failure of Sachin and Dravid (Rahul Dravid) is responsible for the poor performance of the team. In Sourav’s words,
“I was not getting runs. When I entered the dressing room that day, everyone started asking me questions. They showed up the newspaper and asked why I said that in front of the media. Which is what I never said. Especially Sachin and Harbhajan. They said they got hurt for my comment.”
After listening to his teammates, Sourav decided, “If the claim is true, I will resign from the captaincy. Someone else comes and takes the captaincy from me then. Saying this I sat down in my chair. After a while, I saw that everyone burst out laughing. ‘It was an April Fool’s prank’, Harbhajan jumped up.”
However, Sourav admits, the incident teaches him anew, how much the team loves him. Which helped boost his confidence.
