South Africa seal series in rain-affected encounter
The hosts South Africa clinch the five-match series after three wins in a row against Sri Lanka in Durban.
After the shocking Test series defeat, South Africa haven’t looked backwards and they have dominated the Lions in the limited-overs format.
The visitors opted to field first after winning the toss. South Africa lost Reeza Hendricks early for 4, but De Kock, who was finding it hard to get among the runs has finally woke up with a brilliant hundred.
With 16 fours and 2 sixes, de Kock scored 121 off just 108 balls. Skipper Faf du Plessis played a good cameo of 36 from 27, Van der Dussen scored a stunning fifty while superb cameos from David Miller (41* and Phehlukwayo (38) took South Africa to a massive score of 331 runs.
Van der Dussen’s innings was stable as usual but he couldn’t push the scoring rate. The batsman fell soon after registering his fourth ODI fifty, becoming Kamindu Mendis’s first ODI victim.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost their openers early in the chase. After the early damage, the visitors couldn’t fight back and the rain interruption made things even worse. Wickets tumbled in quick succession and it took Sri Lanka away from the target with each passing over. Eventually, they fell 71 runs short of the revised target.
South Africa 331/5 in 50 overs (Quinton de Kock 121, Rassie van der Dussen 50; Isuru Udana 2-50, Kamindu Mendis 1-45) beat Sri Lanka 121/5 in 24 overs (Kusal Mendis 41, Oshada Fernando 24; Imran Tahir 2-18) by 71 runs (DLS Method).
